The Phone Book

by Pauline Masurel

If the printshop is open I might go and grain my stone ready for next week. While I'm there I can see if anyone is using the press. If not I may proof that last plate. It means washing out the plate, inking it up, making a print, inking it again, making another print until the blacks are really deep and not papery, checking the light areas with tone are printing okay. This will all take me some considerable time. I rehearse this explanation in intricate detail to tell to my husband. I build it up, layer upon layer until it is clean, sharp and indisputable. Then I will put another etch on it and set it aside until tomorrow. "I am going," I shall say, "to see if anyone is using the press." If a certain person happens by then I may need the rest of my excuse.
