The Phone Book

The Sheriff sat on the veranda where a bounty notice fluttered. Filming dragged on. He glanced at his wrist as though Continuity might have negligently left him some concept of time. He tipped his hat, fingered his badge. He wasn't 'in charge', only slightly more important than the horse they'd had put down. The real box-office draws played the anti-hero, Blue, and the Deputy who'd nail the villain, leaving him looking foolish as well as ill-informed regarding time. He consoled himself deciding which to bed tonight- the diligent continuity girl, or a wardrobe assistant? There were compensations being character actor rather than heart-throb. His success with women had never depended upon age or looks and showed no sign of abating now his career was in decline. He waited for Blue to ride into town. When it happened they had to cut and re-film because his close-up revealed a self-satisfied smirk.
